Springtime Cat Shedding

March 27, 2013

All of a sudden I’m seeing little tufts of grey hair here & there on the carpet.  Following them like a trail of crumbs from Hansel & Gretel they lead me to my Dessa’s favorite sleeping places. Now I know! It’s spring and the time for cats to shed their winter coat.

Shedding is normal and healthy for cats. It helps them get rid of dead and loose hair which can irritate their skin. Being a Russian Blue our cat has a thick, dense double coat of fur.  She has a lot of fur to shed!  (This can also mean a lot of hairballs).

We know it’s time to step up the brushing and grooming to help her out.  Some cats love this attention and Dessa tolerates it fairly well when she is in a mellow mood. It’s also a good “bonding” time but when she has had enough she definitely lets us know!  After a brushing her coat feels so soft and sleek when you stroke her.  And I bet she feels refreshed.

“This smells familiar!”

Some people make good use of this fur.  They might spin it into a soft yarn for knitting or crocheting. Or transform it into handicrafts as seen in the book, Crafting with Cat Hair.  We use the fur and hair from other animals for miscellaneous things so is this so different?  It’s your call!

There’s no items made of cat hair/fur at Georgia’s Gifts, but we have whimsical gifts & decor for cat lovers everywhere. We invite you to check us out!

If you like cat tiles you might be familiar with the artist Claudia Sanchez. She does beautiful cat art that is converted onto ceramic tiles. I have carried her vivid colored cat tiles for several years. Recently she changed manufacturers and came out with new 8″ x 8″ designs which I found on my last trip to the LA gift show. They are very unique with a black background that makes the image stand out.  Here are a few of them that I have featured on my website.

Continuing Search for New Cat Lover Gifts, Part II

February 23, 2013

In part I of my search I talked about some great new decorated cat tag pendants.  Today I’ll tell you about one new product line I now have on my website, plus a new style on a regular line.

I was very excited to find a whimsical and heartwarming group of cat frames , cat mugs and message stones. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens in the world of retail, the mugs were out of stock for a couple of months.  I loved the mugs, but the frames are still outstanding and hold their own. There are several styles, and I’ll show you a couple here, but my favorite is the one that says, “Best. Cat. Ever.”  Of course, if you have several cats, you might have to get several frames, because aren’t all your cats the Best Ever?

Cat Artist Claudia Sanchez Re-Mixed

July 15, 2012

I have featured ceramic tiles with the colorful cat art by Claudia Sanchez for several years on my website. She has a loyal following and some of the pieces are very popular, especially “Samantha”.  This design is a multi colored close-up of a cat’s face with eyes that mesmerize you.

Sadly I have sold out of the Samantha tile and can not reorder it at this time. This brings me to the good news! I’m excited to tell you that the artist has a new distributer and they are working together to redesign the older tiles and bring out new ones.  I love the new name of the line, ”Claudia’s Cats”.  These are scheduled to be available in the fall, just in time for your holiday shopping!

Here is a preview of some of the styles that will be coming out. Keep in touch on my website or like my facebook page to learn when they are in stock.  Let me know if you are a collector of Claudia Sanchez and which tiles are your favorites, both old and new!

Ceramic or Porcelain- Can You Tell The Difference?

June 3, 2012

I’ve always been a little confused about the difference in the terms “ceramic” and “porcelain”.  It seems to be an interchangeable (or sometimes combined) word for figurines although most people perceive porcelain as being higher quality. After much researching I’ve discovered various differences between them. Without getting into the technical and scientific facts of the types of clays, firing temperatures, etc., here are a few easy ways to determine the type of ceramic….

  • The category “ceramic” includes pottery, bone china, earthenware and porcelain.
  • Porcelain originated in China and derives its current name from porcellana, an old italian word for ”cowrie shell” because of its resemblance to the translucent surface of the shell
  • Porcelain is made with light colors of clay minerals and fired at a high temperature giving it a glossy, glass like quality.
  • Tap a porcelain figure and you’ll hear a bell-like ring while the ceramic figure will make a dull sound.
  • The surface of porcelain is fine and smooth, not grainy like other types of ceramics.
  • Ceramic is very opaque, while porcelain is translucent. Hold your figurine up to a light and move your finger behind the item. You should be able to see a slight shadow of your finger if it is porcelain.

In reading this it sounds like porcelain figurines are much more desirable than ceramics.  But in fact, the important thing to remember is to purchase what YOU like and will enjoy viewing and collecting during the years.  That is the true value of a figurine.

Check out the pictures below. Tell me which one you think is porcelain and which is ceramic. (clicking on the pictures will take you to my website where you will find out the answer).

New Cat Kitchen Linens

February 27, 2012

One of the popular pages on my website is for cat kitchen decor so I’m always on the search for new designs.  If you check out the web page you’ll see my recent addition, a sweet grey tabby cat checking out a vase of pretty pink flowers on a flour sack towel with a matching potholder.

In addition to this design, I’ve added a new product with the black cat design featured on my website page- a tea cozy.  What a perfect name for this cover! The cozy keeps your teapot warm, and when teamed up with a matching towel and potholder also gives your room a “cozy” feel.

Hello Kitty “Ambassador of Cute”

February 20, 2012

I had no idea how impressive Hello Kitty (aka Kitty White) is on the global front!  A few years ago the Japanese tourism ministry appointed Hello Kitty to represent the country in China and Hong Kong.  Officials hoped that tapping into this fan base would bring more travelers to Japan and tourism has definitely grown since then.

Now EVA airlines (based in Taipei) has introduced three new planes with Hello Kitty designs inside & out. Shown here is the Apple plane. Apples are a main theme in the Hello Kitty world.

Flight attendant on EVA airline Hello Kitty plane. At check-in you get Hello Kitty boarding passes and bag stickers. During the flight are various themed goodies and the flight attendants are decked out with Hello Kitty aprons. If you are an extreme fan, there’s even a website for the airlines in chinese-language.

Usually this is not my style of cat art, but I really like Hello Kitty!  I do have to admit that I didn’t care too much for it when I was younger, but have become attached to it as I “matured”.  (Not sure what that means about me.)  I find the colors and the Japanese design influence very appealing. I’m not really a collector, but I do have a few pieces of jewelry and trinkets with the motif.

There are a multitude of products out there but one of my favorite Hello Kitty items are the plush designs by TY.  Are you a collector? What are your favorites? Don’t be afraid to admit it, I did!

Whimsiclay Holiday Cats-Older Styles Are Hard To Beat!

October 4, 2011

To survive a manufacturing company must always have new styles coming out and also retire some pieces to keep the line in demand.  The Whimsiclay cats I sell on my website usually have new designs about twice a year ( although this year it’s been less).

The holiday cat figurines are always cute and sell well.  Several older styles and a few recent ones have been retired or in some cases, just out of stock for the rest of the year.  Luckily, a couple of my very favorites are still around and I think are hard to beat.  Check out Rudy and Sparkie, shown below. If you like them don’t put off purchasing from my website or anywhere else as this could their last season.
