Creative Cat Blog

November 6, 2011

I know there are a lot of cat blogs out there to read. Some really stand out because of their humor, photos and creativity.  My own blog is still in it’s “growing stage” and hopefully will become one of those that stand out.

One blog I subscribe to is very creative, written from the cat’s point of view with great pictures.  I wanted to pass it along to you so you can also enjoy it – http://housecatconfidential.blogspot.com/

Go there and meet “Fin” and get some good chuckles.  (Then be sure to come back & visit my blog : )

Does This Cat Look Happy?

October 27, 2011
White cat with helmet hat costume

"I dare you to try & put the rest of that costume on me"

Many people like to dress up their pets for Halloween so the “whole family” is in costume.  Or maybe they want a cute photo to share with friends.

Dogs tolerate this pretty well but you sure can’t say that about cats!  You might have a sweet, docile kitty that will put up with the extra attention for a while, but most will not cooperate.  Be prepared for some growling, hissing and maybe some scratching – so have that camera at the ready!

"Any second, I'll get my chance & I'm gone!

This tabby looks like he’s had just about enough!  You can see it in his eyes, relax your grip for just a brief second and he’ll be long gone. And luck finding him for a while.

"I know, I'm so cute"

Now some kitties seem to actually like the dress-up.  These cats know the rewards they will get for a few annoying minutes- extra treats and lots of attention!

According to the National Retail Federation the most popular pet costumes this year are:

Pumpkin
Devil
Hot Dog
Bee
Cat
At least one of that group will be an easy one for you & your kitty’s Halloween portrait!

Retired Whimsiclay Ceramic Cats

October 16, 2011

To help my collectors of Whimsiclay ceramic cat figurines by Amy Lacombe, I have compiled a list of the recent retired pieces.  You can see the list on my website by clicking here.

I have also included the cats that are low in stock at the manufacturer and will be retired when they have sold out.  Some of the styles are on my site and some are not.  I have included them for your information.

You might have noticed several styles on my web site that are currently out of stock.  Many of these are due to production problems and unfortunately won’t be back in my inventory before the Christmas shopping season.  I’m hoping the company will work out their issues and next year will bring a batch of brand new cat styles plus a re-stocking of these out of stock styles.

Whimsiclay Holiday Cats-Older Styles Are Hard To Beat!

October 4, 2011

To survive a manufacturing company must always have new styles coming out and also retire some pieces to keep the line in demand.  The Whimsiclay cats I sell on my website usually have new designs about twice a year ( although this year it’s been less).

The holiday cat figurines are always cute and sell well.  Several older styles and a few recent ones have been retired or in some cases, just out of stock for the rest of the year.  Luckily, a couple of my very favorites are still around and I think are hard to beat.  Check out Rudy and Sparkie, shown below. If you like them don’t put off purchasing from my website or anywhere else as this could their last season.

Where’s Jack the Cat?

September 3, 2011

By now many of you have read the facebook story about Jack the Cat. If not, he is a beautiful long hair cat that was lost in the AA baggage area at JFK on August 25th. He now has his own facebook page so you can track his story.  Recently a FAQ section was added to get everyone up to speed about him. I have posted a link to that below.

At first I was a little suspicious that this was all a PR attempt for fame. But it’s gone too far to be just that. Now I believe the poor cat got out of his cage and is hiding, or he was stolen.  AA seems to have this whole story on a “low priority” to me. Either that or their lack of communication is making them look very bad.  Of course, Hurricane Irene also impacted the whole situation, having the airport closed.

Traveling with pets in any form can be traumatic. I would be terrified to put my cats in the baggage area of an airplane and I’m sure the owner, Karen, was not happy about doing it.  At least some airlines now allow smaller animals to be on board in a carrier.

My heart goes out to Karen and I hope this story has a happy ending. She would probably appreciate hearing some good stories about pet travels if you have them.

What does your cat weigh?

August 31, 2011

Do you keep a close watch on your cat’s weight?  It’s a tendency for indoor cats to slowly put on the pounds, due to the lack of exercise and overeating (just like their human counterpart).  This can cause so many health problems for our fur friends - diabetes, arthritis, heart problems and more. Cats can’t be blamed for this, we have to be in control. This can be tough love on our parts, when they are meowing for a treat.

I have to admit at our house we are a little compulsive about this, as we like the look of a lean, healthy cat.  We monitor their eating and how their body looks and try to have a little “playtime” everyday. The chart below is a good guide to judging if your cat is overweight. Besides the “belly” of the cat, we also see any weight gain in the face. Our cat right now is about a 4 to 5 on the chart.  Take a look and see how you would rate your cats.  As with anything else, if you catch a problem early it’s easier to correct.  A trip to the vet would confirm any weight or health issues that need addressing.

The “Big Meow”

August 15, 2011

Cat at Redlands Shelter

No, this is not about a cat show.

This is about a wonderful event planned in the Ontario, CA area to aid in the feline overpopulation problem.  This event addresses the sad, sad reality that over 2 million cats and kittens in shelters across America are humanely euthanized each year.  And cats are more likely to be put down because of lack of identification.

On Wednesday & Thursday,  the 17th & 18th of August, the Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. along with Pet Connections Inc.  are hosting the “Big Meow”.  This is a no-cost spay and neuter event for owned, outdoor cats (females on Wed., males on Thurs.). Funding is by local, caring donors in the community.

Cats participating must be between 4 months and 7 years old and live in the S.P.C.A. service area of Chino, Claremont, Diamond Bar, La Verne, Montclair, Ontario, Pomona and San Dimas. Owners must provide proof of residency.

Qualified owners are encouraged to call for an appointment and more information at 909-623-9777, ext. 669.  Inland Valley Humane Society is located at 500 Humane Way, Pomona 91766.

Hats off to this group for providing this service. Maybe other caring people will take the chance to be more proactive and the “Big Meow” could take off across the country!!

Is my cat lonesome?

August 12, 2011

Eight years ago we adopted 2 kittens at a local Petsmart. We wanted two so they could keep each other company, especially when we were gone all day or overnight. Each kitten was about 8 weeks old and from different litters. We always called them “sisters”. They were like typical siblings, sometimes playing, sometimes fighting, as they grew up together.

Our yellow tabby lost her battle with kidney disease a couple of months ago. All of us miss her: me, my husband and her “sister”, named Dessa.

While I am slowly getting over the loss, I worry about Dessa.  I could tell she was a little depressed at first but seems better now.  The decision to make now is whether to get another cat or not.  Is Dessa lonesome, or getting used to being the center of attention? Do we need to do this soon before she gets too attached to us and won’t accept another cat in the house? Since she was used to having a playmate, maybe she would welcome a new sister or brother.  We dread the thought of the break-in period, and then what happens if they don’t get along?

And on our side, one cat is easier to take care of.  Less litter scooping, less noise at mealtime.  And have you tried to play with 2 cats at the same time?

But it’s also nice to have two - one for each of our laps!  (I really have enough love in my heart to have several cats to cuddle)

I’d love to hear how other people have fared in bringing another cat into an established cat household. Any special tricks to make the transition go smoothly?
