I’m A Pet Adoption Wimp

June 28, 2014

Today on a hot California Saturday there was a “Mega Adoption Event” in Yucaipa.  It’s a wonderful event sponsored by local adoption, rescue and shelter agencies to try to adopt the numerous rescue animals, plus offering low cost microchips and vaccines for your pets. Having a free day I decided to go ahead and go.

My hubby is always a little nervous when I go to these things because I might cave and bring home a new member of the family. He is afraid to upset the balance we have with our sweet Russian Blue who is now the queen of the household since her “sister” cat passed away 2 years ago.

And I have to admit, as much as I love to see the kitties, it also tears at my heartstrings. I want to take them all home!  Even when we go buy supplies at Pet Smart I can only look at the cats for adoptions for a short time as I get very depressed. What a wimp!

At this event the dogs out-numbered the cats about 4 to 1.  I have to admit some were certainly adorable! Of all the animals there, I think it would be very hard to pick just one.  You would have to find the one that looked you in the eye and made you fall in love!

I adore cats and support TNR, but being so wimpy, I have to help the cat community in other ways, such as donations or spreading information on social media. Plus I have a website that offers gifts and décor for cat lovers.  Are there others out there that feel like I do?  I’m here to testify! Will you join me?

Cats Get Cake Top Honors!

Miniature Porcelain Cats as Cake Topper for Wedding

Miniature Porcelain Cats as Cake Topper for Wedding

I recently learned that some of our beautiful porcelain miniature kitties we carry received top honors as a wedding cake topper for one of our customers. What higher praise is that!

Seven separate cakes with one that showcased the cats.

The very unique wedding cake was one in a grouping of seven cakes elegantly arranged in a metal stand. The bride and her father actually made the cakes themselves.

It was so kind for the new couple to share these photos with us. And they also relayed this story to us which is bittersweet.  “The four kitties represented the cats we had between us. Sadly, in the last nine months, three of them have gone over the rainbow bridge (the orange one most recently). The tuxedo cat is still with us and doing well in her new home.”

We wish the couple many happy years ahead and many more cats to love!

Continuing Search for New Cat Lover Gifts, Part II

February 23, 2013

In part I of my search I talked about some great new decorated cat tag pendants.  Today I’ll tell you about one new product line I now have on my website, plus a new style on a regular line.

I was very excited to find a whimsical and heartwarming group of cat frames , cat mugs and message stones. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens in the world of retail, the mugs were out of stock for a couple of months.  I loved the mugs, but the frames are still outstanding and hold their own. There are several styles, and I’ll show you a couple here, but my favorite is the one that says, “Best. Cat. Ever.”  Of course, if you have several cats, you might have to get several frames, because aren’t all your cats the Best Ever?

Heartbeat Of A Cat

November 14, 2012

I have a secret favorite thing to do. I like to hold my kitty in a certain way so I can feel her heartbeat. There’s something about that soft but constant beat that assures me that my beautiful girl is healthy and happy. Plus it reminds me that this is a warm, furry creature of nature that’s allowing me to be in its world for a moment before struggling to get free from my firm grasp.

I did some research about “cat’s hearts” online. Below is a diagram of a cat’s anatomy just to show where a cat’s heart is located to make it easier for you to find the spot to feel the heartbeat.  Did you know a cat’s beat is almost double that of a human’s?  The range is from 120 – 220, depending on how excited your cat is.  A relaxed cat should be around 130.

I also watched a few anatomy dissections which I prefer not to even think about again. And I read about heart disease in cats and what to look for and do but that’s not the purpose of this post.

I’d rather think about that sweet heartbeat in my kitty as a confirmation of life and appreciate her for just being the wonderful creature she is – a cat!

Tales of Cat Tails

August 29, 2012

Our cats have very distinct ways of communicating with us.  There are the variety of “meows” ranging from a soft sweet mew sound to an annoying “feed me now” MEOWWWW!

And of course their eyes send us subtle messages.  The slow closing and opening eyes which seems to show contentment; the wide-eyed stare when watching prey (even if it’s a feather on a long stick); or a loving look which melts your heart.

But the cat’s most expressive method is it’s tail- the perfect barometer of its mood.  Before I elaborate on that, I’ll tell you about my internet research on cat tails.  After wading through a mix of “cat’s tails” and “cattails” there seemed to be a lot of mis-information about the anatomy of cat tails.  To set the record straight, here is a short lesson from a medical center:

The tail consists of a varying number of vertebrae (called “caudal” vertebrae), voluntary muscle, and ligaments and tendon to hold it all together. The tail attaches to the body at an area called “the tail head.” The first caudal vertebra attaches to a special backbone called “the sacrum” which connects the tail and lower back (“lumbar”) vertebrae. Injuries to the tail can cause serious nerve damage.

The number of vertebrae is 19-28, and varies from cat to cat. (Our tailbone has only 4, in case you are interested).

Now that that’s out-of-the-way we can talk about the fun stuff, the wonderful and delightful way a cat really tells us what is going on. I’m sure you have all witnessed most of these.

The Erect Tail- My cat will meet me at the door with a straight up tail which I think means she is content and glad to see me. (Plus she knows a treat will soon be coming). A slight curve at the tip lets me know she is in a playful mood.Question mark tail on cat shows contentment

The Curl– Sometimes, walking between my legs, my cat will let her tail curl gently around my leg or foot. I take this as a loving touch letting me know that she approves of me, at the moment anyway.

The Wagging Tail–  This lets you know your cat is not really sleeping but is content and partially alert.

The Swish–  A very focused cat, watching birds out the window or about to pounce on a toy.

The Whip– “I’m annoyed” is the definite message. And if my cat almost beats her tail back & forth I know she has had enough!

The Bristle– If your cat’s tail suddenly looks like a fat caterpillar you know it’s frightened or feels threatened.

Do you have some more to add to this list? I bet your cat has some special moves all it own and I’d love for you to share them! Cat cartoon with twitching tail

Miniature Cat Figurines-Simply Adorable!

June 12, 2012

The first day I saw this line of tiny porcelain cat figurines I fell in love with them.  There’s a certain charm in their poses and expressions that will capture you.  And being so tiny, they are easy and fun to collect or to give as gifts. Let me tell you about these little darlings…

These miniatures are manufactured in Chiang Mai, Thailand, known as “Rose of the North” and a major center for fine porcelain.

The figurines are hand-painted by talented artists in the Thailand factory.

Every piece is high-fired and the rigorous quality control of the company guarantees the colors, the perfect shape and the sharpness of every detail. There is much experience and skill needed to produce the details of these fine figurines.

The factory produces all kinds of animals but of course my focus is on the delightful cats and kittens.  Some are in typical cat poses and some are joined with books or musical instruments. Their sizes range from 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/2 inches tall.

Although these are called miniatures, some go even smaller!  Named “Little Critters”  these minis are about 1 to 1 1/2 inches and still have all the delicate details of the larger minis.

I’d love to hear your comments on these cats!

The Absolute Cuteness of A Sleeping Cat!

April 7, 2012

Once in a while I like to just sit and watch my cat. Sometimes she is so busy-  a face bath takes a while, and that tail needs to be smoothed down, and those freshly trimmed claws need some attention to make sure they feel right. Then she has to just sit and ponder her world for a bit. If only we could have a glimpse into a cat’s mind to see what they are thinking!

Then after all that, it’s definitely time for a nap.  And the cat is the supreme napper!  Of course some might believe babies or puppies top the list, but for me the cat will win every time.

When the whole house is a bed, how do they decide where to curl up or stretch out?  I know after a nice lunch that sunny room is a preferred spot.  I’ve seen my cats move with the sun!

Or when a load of freshly dried laundry is so warm and inviting to a cat, how can I refuse letting her get a toasty snooze?

Another thing to enjoy is the many positions a cat will get in when in a deep, sound sleep.  I like the back curl, it looks like the cat is in pure ecstasy. Below are a few favorites.
